Bad Weather & Travel Issues

If you live in a snow zone, you're already fully aware that for roughly 4-6 months out of the year, you're exposed to potential snow, ice, wind and any combination thereof. And like me, you know that bad weather can hamper party plans, because nobody in their right mind would drive in the stuff! So here they are, bad weather problems: solved!

Problem: Snow, Ice, or Extreme Cold

Solution:

  • If necessary, choose a backup date or have a virtual option available.
  • Send out invitations early with a note about possible rescheduling.
  • Offer transportation alternatives like carpooling or ride-share options.
  • Plan the party as an overnight stay.

Note: Never encourage folks to drive in inclement weather. You should discourage them from taking the risk. Their lives are much more important. Check out the National Weather Service site for tips on winter travel and for winter-weather forecasts.

Indoor Space Limitations

Many city dwellers are painfully aware of the problems that come with a lack of space, especially those living in flats with tight floorpans. You always want to put safety first and never exceed your space limit as determined by your local authority such as the fire marshal. Ensure there is access to multiple exits and guests can flow freely in and out without elbowing someone in the eye or something similarly catastrophic. When in doubt, check it out.

Problem: Parties Can Get Cramped

Solution

  • Use creative layouts to maximize space.
  • Set up different activity zones to spread guests out.
  • Open the balcony (if safe), garage, basement, or patio and add some breathing room.
  • If you live in a planned community, rent the clubhouse.

Lack of Outdoor Activities

We don't choose our day of birth, and not everyone has a palm tree in their backyard. And some of us deal with inclement weather that hampers our ability walk or even stand outside without freezing or getting soaking wet. It's something to think about when planning your winter birthday party at home. Good news! I've got solutions. Check 'em out below.

Problem: Cold Temperatures Limit Party Activities

Solution:

  • Organize winter-themed indoor games (hot cocoa bar, snowman building contest (inside, use cotton balls), or a winter scavenger hunt).
  • If safe, consider outdoor activities like sledding, snowball fights, or ice skating. If you've got snowmobiles, have a field day! Literally.

Dry Air & Static Electricity

Ugh, probably one of the worst things about living in a cold-weather region are the side-effects of heated homes. That's because heat dries out the air, which in turn generates lots of static, including those awful shocks you get when you walk across carpet with your socks on. After that, try shaking hands with someone. Ouch!

Most women have the dry skin thing covered by carrying lotion in their purse, but having these solutions to hand can help you make them comfortable in case an issue arises.

Solution:

  • Use humidifiers or bowls of water in rooms to add moisture.
  • Place lotion next to the hand soap in the bathroom and encourage its use.
  • Offer them anti-static spray (eg., Static Guard) for their clothing.

Heating Issues: Under and Overheating

Another lovely winter challenge is keeping the house a steady temperature when guests arrive and add a body temperature issue that's easy to overcompensate for. The result? Either people can't breathe it's so hot, or they won't take off their colds, because they're too cold. To help you overcome this fun riddle, here are some solutions to try.

Problem: Difficulty Maintaining the Proper Temperature with a Houseful of Guests

temperature management

Solution

  • Set the thermostat slightly lower before guests arrive to prevent overheating.
  • Provide cozy throw blankets for guests who get cold.
  • Light the fireplace if you have one. (Assign the task to your spouse or a trusted volunteer. And once again, keep it safe. Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear.)
  • Set up a cozier area where those who are chilled might sit.
  • If you must open a window, make it an obvious one you won't forget about. Doing so could result in frozen pipes or other damage.

Managing the Mess from Snow & Mud

People who live where it's cold are used to taking their shoes off before entering the house, or they're not offended if you ask. That's because we're not proud. We all have to wear boots! :D Just give your guests a comfortable area to shoe-up and shoe-down, and you're all set.

Solution

  • Have a designated area for wet shoes and coats.
  • Place extra mats or towels near the entrance.
  • At our house, we keep a bucket of water nearby on extra muddy days.
  • Provide slippers or socks for guests to wear inside.

Limited Theme & Decoration Options

Another problem with winter birthdays is lack of winter-theme decorations. Even with wrapping paper it's either floral (spring or summer) or it's snowflakes (Christmas). Don't despair my frosty little chickadee. I've got solutions below!

Problem: Lack of Winter-Themed
Birthday Decorations

Solution:

  • Use creative winter birthday themes (Winter Wonderland, Cozy Cabin, Arctic Adventure).
  • Mix holiday decor with birthday elements if it's near Christmas.

Food & Drink Temperature Issues

In the cold months, you likely have hot food that needs a stovetop or an oven. Then, you'll also have cold foods and beverages that need chilling. Maybe people have a second refrigerator that helps them with overflow.

Problem: Cold Drinks Might be Too Cold,
and Hot Food Cools Too Fast

Solution

  • Offer warm beverage options like cocoa, cider, or tea.
  • Use slow cookers or warming trays to keep food hot.
  • If fridge space is an issue, fill two ice chests and use one for cocktail ice, the other for bottles and cans.

Cold & Flu Season

When Covid-19 isn't holding the world in lockdown, we all deal with the typical round(s) of cold and flu during the winter months. A case of the flu can knock your guests out of commission for days so, it's a real thing if it happens. You're better off letting them go to bed than spreading it around. Here are

Problem: Last Minute Cancellations Due to Illness

Solution

  • Keep the guest list flexible and expect some no-shows.
  • Provide hand sanitizer and tissues.
  • Offer a Zoom option where under-the-weather guests can join in.

Holiday Competition

For the group of people born in winter, some were born at the Christmas holidays. While it's awesome to get a Christmas tree for your birthday as a kid, it's not so awesome to have to vie for attention with Christmas, because you will never win. So here are some tips for navigating holiday birthday parties.

Problem: People May Be Too Busy with
Holiday Events to Attend

Solution

  • Plan the party for early or mid-January to avoid holiday conflicts.
  • Send invites early so guests can plan ahead and won't book the date for something else.

Gift Storage & Transport

When it comes to birthday gifts and winter, several problematic aspects can enter in. First, when your guests travel to your party, they risk slipping or dropping their gift in the snow or mud, making gifting somewhat hazardous in the winter months. Second, once they do bring the gifts, you need to have a place to put them. Check out these solutions for ideas.

Problem: Lack of Space for Guests and Gifts

Solution

  • Offer a digital gift option for online deliveries.
  • Go vertical. Designate a space for gifts, like a cleared-off table.
  • Where I live, a lot of people have garages right off their kitchens. If needed, we use that area as an overflow to keep the indoor space clutter-free.

Well there you have it. A plethora of helpful, practical solutions to common winter birthday party problems. It just goes to show, you can party despite the snow!
